How Neighbors Can Support Local Businesses During Coronavirus

Neighbors rely on their local businesses every day. But across the country, main streets are quiet while people stay home to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Many have taken to Nextdoor to rally support for local stores and to make sure these businesses are still around once the coronavirus is under control.

Neighbors need their local dry cleaners, coffee shops, and movie theaters. Some businesses have been forced to temporarily close while others are suffering from significantly decreased cash flow right now.

Here’s how you can help your local small businesses:

  • Call or go online to buy gift cards to use later. Jon from Oakland, CA suggests purchasing gift cards to help local businesses with cash flow that will keep them afloat.
  • If a restaurant is open, order food for takeout or delivery. Most restaurants that are still open are adapting to support to-go orders and delivery services. Robert from Indianapolis, IN suggests that neighbors continue to shop locally by ordering takeout, delivery and gift cards.
  • Place orders online when non-essential stores have to temporarily close. Jackie from Fall City, WA suggests supporting local businesses through online shopping. Just because a business’s physical store has to close doesn’t mean that the business has to cease operations. Purchase birthday or holiday gifts in advance through the store’s website.
  • Take advantage of deals that businesses may be offering, like discounts on takeout orders or free shipping. Some local businesses are offering free shipping in an effort to support their customers who are staying home. Some businesses, like coffeeshops, have closed their storefronts, but they know you depend on them as part of your daily routine. Take advantage of a deal like free shipping to stock up so you can stick to your routine from home.
  • Tip more than usual. Kate of Chicago, IL wants her neighbors to remember the workers who depend on their tips. Continue to tip workers who provide a service to you – and tip extra if you can – even if you’re not able to fully take advantage of the services they provide.

Local small businesses need your support now more than ever to weather this unprecedented storm. This is a stressful time for everyone, but a little bit of kindness goes a long way. Consider sending a note of gratitude to your favorite local business reminding them of your support and the value they bring to your local community. Your words will surely brighten their day.
